Agadir to Essaouira coastal road: the road trip and its stops
Published on 20 October 2026
Taking the Agadir to Essaouira coastal road is one of the most enjoyable road trips in southern Morocco. The route follows the Atlantic, passes through surf villages, climbs above sea cliffs, then cuts through argan forests before meeting the ocean again on the edge of Essaouira.
You can easily do the drive in a single day, but it rewards a slower pace. Below you will find the stops worth making, realistic journey times, our driving tips, and two ways to plan the trip.
Distance and journey time
Between Agadir and Essaouira, expect around 175 to 190 km depending on where you start and how many detours you take. Without long stops, allow roughly 3 hours to 3 hours 30 of driving. This is not a motorway: it is a two-lane road with winding sections, village crossings and a few climbs above the sea.
In reality, once you add photo stops, lunch and maybe a swim, the day flies by. Set off in the morning to enjoy the light and reach Essaouira before dark.
Stops along the way, from south to north
Taghazout, the surf village
Around 25 km from Agadir, or roughly 40 minutes by car, Taghazout is the obvious first stop. This former fishing village has become a magnet for surfers from all over the world. Grab a coffee facing the waves, stroll along the beach and you are already in holiday mode. If you want to get in the water, our guide to surfing in Taghazout and Tamraght breaks down the spots by level.
Tamri, bananas and rare birds
Tamri is about 45 minutes from Agadir. The village spreads around an estuary lined with banana plantations, with fruit stalls along the roadside. It is also linked to the northern bald ibis, the emblematic bird of the Souss-Massa region. Keep your eyes open, and bring binoculars if you have them.
Cap Ghir and its lighthouse
Close to Tamri, Cap Ghir juts out into the Atlantic. Its lighthouse, built in 1932, overlooks cliffs pounded by the swell. It is one of the most striking viewpoints on the coast: park only where it is allowed, never on the verge in a bend, and take a moment to watch the sea.
Imsouane, the sheltered bay
From Agadir via Tamri, Imsouane is around 85 km away, or about 1 hour 40 of driving. The village lies a short drive off the N1, down a side road towards the sea. Its sheltered bay draws beginner surfers and travellers looking for peace and quiet. It is a great place for a grilled fish lunch, or for an overnight stay if you split the journey.
Tamanar and argan oil
Further north, the road moves slightly inland into argan country. In Tamanar, several argan oil cooperatives welcome visitors. You can watch how the oil is made and buy culinary or cosmetic oil directly on site.
Smimou and its market
Smimou is a small roadside town known locally for its weekly souk. If you happen to pass on market day, it is a great chance to see rural life up close: vegetables, spices, livestock and everyday household goods. Ask locally which day it takes place.
Sidi Kaouki, the last beach before Essaouira
About 25 km from Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki is a long, windswept surf beach with a handful of cafés and a very laid-back feel. It is a short detour that is well worth it for a final walk by the ocean before you reach town.
Arriving in Essaouira
At the end of the road, Essaouira greets you with its ramparts, its busy fishing harbour and its white-and-blue medina. Leave the car in a car park by the medina gates and explore on foot.
Driving tips for the coast road
- Drive in daylight: street lighting is limited outside towns, and you may meet pedestrians, donkeys or unlit scooters. The scenery deserves daylight anyway.
- Fill up before leaving Agadir, then whenever you get the chance: petrol stations are further apart on some stretches.
- Take bends carefully: some cliff-top sections are narrow with limited visibility. Slow down, keep well to the right and only overtake with a clear straight ahead.
- Goats in the argan trees: you will probably see them between Agadir and Essaouira. Be aware that some of these scenes are staged for tourists, who are then asked to pay for the photo. Our advice is simply not to pay: enjoy the sight from a distance and do not stop just anywhere.
- Carry small change for fruit, mint tea or parking attendants.

One day or two: two ways to do it
In a single day
Leave Agadir early, have coffee in Taghazout, stop for photos at Tamri and Cap Ghir, lunch in Imsouane, visit a cooperative in Tamanar, then detour via Sidi Kaouki and roll into Essaouira in the late afternoon. It is a full day but perfectly doable, as long as you do not linger too long at each stop.
Split over two days
Take day one slowly as far as Imsouane: Taghazout, Tamri, the Cap Ghir lighthouse, then sunset over the bay and a night in the village. Next morning, carry on to Tamanar, Smimou and Sidi Kaouki before reaching Essaouira in time for lunch. This is the version to choose if you want to surf or simply enjoy every stop without watching the clock.
