Agadir to Marrakech by car: motorway, toll, time and stops

Monumental gate in the ramparts of Marrakech, on arrival in the city

Driving from Agadir to Marrakech by car is one of the easiest ways to swap the Atlantic coast for the Red City. A modern motorway climbs through the foothills of the High Atlas, the road surface is good, and the whole journey fits comfortably into half a day, with time left for a coffee stop or two.

This guide covers what you need to know before setting off: the route, how long it takes, the motorway toll, the speed limit, worthwhile stops along the way, the slower national road as an alternative, and how to arrive in Marrakech without the usual city-centre stress.

The route: a direct motorway through the mountains

From Agadir you join the motorway heading north-east towards Marrakech. This 233 km stretch opened on 21 June 2010 and transformed the trip: what used to be a long run of mountain hairpins is now a wide, well-signposted dual carriageway.

Coming from Agadir, the junctions appear in this order:

  • Amskroud, among the first argan-covered hills;
  • Argana, in the most mountainous section;
  • Imintanoute, where the mountains give way to the plain;
  • Chichaoua, already out on the plain;
  • Sidi Zouine / Loudaya;
  • Targa, Tamensourt and Marrakech Palmeraie, the three exits into Marrakech.

Service areas are located at Amskroud, Imintanoute, Chichaoua and on the approach to Marrakech, with fuel, cafés, toilets and snacks. They are not at every junction, so it pays to stop when one comes up rather than pushing on and hoping for the next.

Journey time, toll and speed limit

How long does it take?

Centre to centre, the distance is around 250 km. Expect roughly 2 hours 30 to 3 hours of driving without breaks, depending on where you start in Agadir, traffic on the way out of town and where exactly you are staying in Marrakech. With a couple of stops, think of it as a relaxed half-day.

The motorway toll

The motorway is tolled: you pay at the barriers, and the amount depends on which Marrakech exit you take. For the current rate, check the official Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM) website before you go, and keep some dirham notes and coins in the car.

Speed limit

The motorway limit for cars is 120 km/h. Speed checks do happen, even on quiet stretches. Every Vocarz car comes with cruise control, which makes it easy to stay just under the limit and takes a lot of the fatigue out of the long, straight run across the plain.

Places worth stopping on the way

The motorway is fast, but nothing stops you turning the drive into a mini road trip. Here are a few ideas, from south to north.

  • Amskroud: rolling hills dotted with argan trees, shortly after leaving Agadir. A good first coffee if you set off early.
  • Argana: the most scenic part of the drive, with deep valleys, earth-built villages and impressive engineering works. The landscape changes dramatically here.
  • Imintanoute: a small market town at the foot of the mountains, handy for a simple lunch and a fuel stop.
  • Chichaoua: a stop out on the wide plain leading to Marrakech, with its own service area. A good moment for a last break before the city.

If you have time, leaving the motorway for a mint tea in a village often makes a better memory than a service station. Just remember that side roads are slower going.

The national road: a slower alternative

Before the motorway, everyone used the old national road that winds through the mountains and villages. It is still there and still driveable. It is twistier and slower, and needs more concentration because of lorries, tight bends and busy village centres.

On the plus side, there is no toll and you get a real glimpse of rural life. It suits drivers who enjoy the journey itself and have the whole day free, but it is not ideal if you have a train or a flight to catch in Marrakech. Tips for a smooth drive

A few simple habits make the trip far more pleasant:

  • Fuel: start with a well-filled tank and top up at a service area if needed. At Vocarz the rule is straightforward: return the car with the same fuel level you received it with.
  • Breaks: stop at least once, especially in summer. Air conditioning comes as standard on all our cars, but a proper break is still what keeps you alert.
  • Roadworks: rehabilitation work was reported in 2026 between Argana and Amskroud, with lane closures and diversions. Check the traffic situation before you leave and plan your timing accordingly.
  • Weather: in winter the mountain section can be chilly, windy or misty. Slow down and take it carefully.
  • Paperwork: keep your licence, the car documents and your rental agreement within reach in case of a police check.

Arriving in Marrakech: which exit?

As you near the city, you have three exits to choose from, and the right one depends on where you are staying:

  • Targa: the first exit, handy for the west side of the city.
  • Tamensourt: worth considering if you are staying towards the north-west of the city.
  • Palmeraie: the obvious choice if your riad or hotel is in the Palmeraie or the north-east of Marrakech.

City traffic is busy, with plenty of scooters and lively roundabouts. If you are staying in the medina, find a guarded car park nearby in advance: the narrow lanes are not open to cars.
