Car rental Agadir pitfalls: what to check before you sign

Checking a rental agreement with a pen, inside a car

Hiring a car is a great way to explore Agadir, the surf coast and the mountains behind it, but a few lines in the small print can turn a good deal into an unwelcome surprise at the desk. This guide to car rental Agadir pitfalls is not about pointing fingers: most rental companies are perfectly honest. It is about knowing what to check before you sign, so you can compare offers on a level playing field.

We go through the main sticking points one by one: card holds, extra charges, the condition of the car, mileage limits, insurance, age and licence rules, paying upfront and cancellation.

The deposit held on your card

This is the one that catches most travellers out. Many rental companies, in Morocco as elsewhere, ask for a security deposit at pick-up. It usually takes the form of a hold on a credit card, often one in the main driver's name. The money is not actually taken, but it is frozen: it eats into your available credit for the rest of the trip, and it can take a while to be released after you return the car.

Before you book, check:

  • the exact deposit amount, in writing;
  • which cards are accepted (credit or debit, and in whose name);
  • how and when the hold is released;
  • your own card limit, so you are not stuck at the counter.

There is an alternative. At Vocarz, the deposit is €0, so nothing is held on your card at all. Our article on car rental deposits in Agadir explains how deposits usually work, and our no deposit car rental in Agadir page explains our approach.

Hidden costs: fuel, extras and delivery

Fuel charges

Depending on the fuel policy, a tank returned with less in it than at the start may be recharged at a higher rate than at the pump, sometimes with a service fee on top. The most transparent rule is "same level out, same level back": you return the car as you found it and only pay for the fuel you actually used. That is the rule we apply. Fill up just before drop-off and hang on to the receipt.

Extras and add-ons

The headline price does not always include everything. Read the list of possible extras, such as sat nav, dropping the car at a different branch or city, or a late return. None of these is unreasonable in itself, but they should be spelled out clearly before you book, not sprung on you at the desk.

Delivery

Having the car brought to the airport or your hotel is very handy, but it is sometimes charged separately, especially late at night. Ask whether delivery and collection are included, and to which addresses. With Vocarz, both are free around the clock, seven days a week, at Agadir Al Massira airport and at your hotel or address in Agadir, Taghazout and Tamraght. If you are planning a one-way trip, check the drop-off cost too: we offer free one-way rentals to Marrakech and Essaouira, where you simply leave the car at no extra charge.

The condition of the car: dated photos and videos

Most end-of-rental disputes are about scratches or dents that nobody can quite date. The fix is simple: a joint inspection at pick-up and at return, signed by both sides.

  • Walk round the car with the rental agent and note every mark on the form.
  • Take dated photos and a video of the bodywork, wheels, windscreen and interior.
  • Snap the odometer and the fuel gauge.
  • Do it all again at drop-off, even if you are told there is no need.

It takes a few minutes and protects everyone, customer and rental company alike.

Mileage limits and insurance: read the clauses

The mileage clause

Some contracts include a set number of kilometres per day or per rental, with every extra kilometre charged on top. Around Agadir, the distances add up quickly: a day in Paradise Valley, another to Marrakech, a few trips up and down to the surf spots. Read the clause before you sign. Our rentals come with unlimited mileage, so there is nothing to keep track of.

What the insurance actually covers

"Insurance" can mean very different things from one contract to the next. Ask exactly what is included and what is not. Before adding any extra cover, also look at what your bank card already provides: some cards include rental protection, others do not, and the conditions are worth reading carefully.

At Vocarz, fully comprehensive insurance is included. As with any policy, it has sensible limits: drink-driving and inappropriate driving are prohibited and are not covered.

Age and licence: what rental companies require

Every rental company sets its own rules, and some are strict: minimum age, how long you must have held your licence, sometimes a minimum level of driving experience. It is far better to find out before you reach the counter. Check which documents are required as well; our guide to the documents you need to rent a car in Morocco covers the essentials.

With us, the minimum age is 21, an international driving permit is not required, and the minimum rental period is 3 days.

Paying upfront or on delivery, and cancelling

Many booking platforms ask you to pay all or part of the rental when you book. That is not a problem in itself, but look at what happens if your flight is cancelled, your dates change or the car is not what you were expecting. Cancellation and refund terms can be restrictive, or missing entirely on the cheapest rates.

Paying on delivery changes things: you pay once the car is in front of you and you have checked it over. That is how we work: nothing to pay in advance, payment in cash (euros, pounds sterling or dirhams) or by card, and free cancellation with no conditions attached.

The bottom line

A stress-free rental in Agadir comes down to a handful of habits: check the deposit and how it is held, spot the extras, document the condition of the car, read the mileage and insurance clauses, know the company's requirements and its cancellation terms. With those in mind, you can compare offers on clear terms. And if you would rather keep things simple, browse our car range or book a car rental at Agadir Al Massira airport.

Frequently asked questions

Is a deposit hold actually charged to my card?

Usually not: the amount is frozen on your card, then released after you return the car, which can take some time. With Vocarz there is no deposit at all, see our no deposit car rental.

What if I spot a scratch that is not on the form?

Tell the rental agent straight away, before you drive off, and have it added to the inspection form. Take a dated photo too.

Is my credit card cover enough?

It depends on the card and its terms. Read your card's rental protection before adding extras, and ask the rental company what its own insurance includes.

Which documents will I need?

Requirements vary between companies. Our guide to documents for renting a car in Morocco covers the essentials; with Vocarz, an international driving permit is not required.

Can I cancel free of charge?

That depends on the contract terms, which are worth reading before you pay. With Vocarz, cancellation is free with no conditions and nothing is paid in advance.
